About the Event
Field Research Behavior Program
We are oxcited to announce yet another unique and interesting program this summer! Renee, one of our summer interns who spits her time between the Education Saff and the Herd Staff has designed this program! It is focused on animal behavior, or more specifically, musk ox behavior. Rene has spent all summer learning not only about musk oxen adaptations and natural history, but also has had hands on experience working with Herd Staff to care for and handle the herd.
What:
This program will include an introduction to musk ox behavior that has been observed here on the farm. It will then go over basic safety rules and a general tour of the farm as you work your way out to view a herd of musk ox. You will then spend about 15 minutes observing the musk oxen, and making a recording every minute, much like you would do when creating a ethogram. You can observe anything from what each member in the herd is doing, what interesting thing might be happening in the environment, and even what is happening with the weather. This activity will help shed light on how animals interact with each other and their environments, and why they behave the way they do.
Over time, gathering data in this way is extremely helpful to understand animal behavior.
